This project entails the renovation of a 470,000sf Federal Building Complex in San Juan. Richard McElhiney Architects is responsible for the work on the 100,000sf Clemente Ruiz Nazario Courthouse. The work, which is funded by ARRA, is a modernization of the early 1970s building for the primary purpose of creating a highly energy-efficient green building. The scope includes replacement of all mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems; removal and replacement of all ceilings and light fixtures; compliance of public areas with Federal Accessibility Standards and correction of egress deficiencies. The improvements are being made in the context of the building’s being considered eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. It is intended that the project achieve a LEED Silver rating.
