Lab of Ornithology Visitor Center Renovation Cornell University Ithaca, NY
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is globally recognized for highlighting the importance of birds and biodiversity on our planet, their citizen science programs, and their beloved apps for birdwatchers. The Visitor Center, constructed in 2003, attracts bird novices and experts from around the world. The facility and site offers miles of outdoor trails for exploring birds in their natural habitats, an interactive experience lab, a theater, an auditorium, art galleries, and an observatory.
This project re-imagined the visitor experience at the lab through physical and digital exhibits, custom media and interactives, and building modifications to support an open, welcoming, and inclusive environment. The space aims to support the Lab’s goal of not only inspiring appreciation for birds and the environment but also motivates visitors to become actively engaged in broader conservation efforts. Through technology and the Lab’s globally-used apps, visitors are connected to the local environment and engaged directly with citizen scientists worldwide.
The project includes the redesign of exhibits and impacted spaces within the Visitor Center. It provided all necessary changes to the floor plans, finishes, mechanical, electrical, structural, accessibility, IT, and AV systems in order to integrate the exhibits while maintaining life safety, code, and ADA compliance.
