Lab Renovation U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Athens, GA
The EPA laboratory in Athens, GA is a recognized leader in advancing and implementing scientific knowledge, and providing scientific and technical support tailored to environmental concerns and issues in the Southeast U.S. It is home to EPA’s Regional Labs. The laboratory uses sound science to provide scientific understanding of complex issues and environmental data for decision makers at the regional and national level. The laboratory also contributes to the local economy in Athens and the surrounding region, and staff are actively engaged in the local community.
The project is a complete building renovation which consolidates laboratories from multiple buildings into one on an EPA-owned campus. The renovation is intended to completely rebuild the labs and replace all building systems, performed over 4 phases. Richard McElhiney Architects, as the successor architect, reprogrammed the labs, validated all the equipment and infrastructure, designed and documented all changes since the original design began in 2018, and is responsible for construction administration. The area of the project is approximately 58,000sf.
